Reflexology
I qualified as a Reflexologist in 2003. Reflexology dates back as far as 5000 years ago. Pictograms found on the wall of Ankhmahor’s tomb (An ancient physician) thought to date back to 2330BC, shows what seems to be pictures of what looks a lot like reflexology . There is also evidence that Reflexology may have developed in China. The Chinese have been using the application of pressure as a therapy for over 5000 years.
What happens during a Reflexology Session?
Pressure and manipulation are applied to the soles of the feet, the ankle and the top of the foot. This stimulates lymph flow and the flow of chi (life force energy) around the body. A lot of people will say that they have got ticklish feet, but please know that due to the firm pressure and nature of this treatment you are unlikely to find it tickles. In fact it can be a most deeply relaxing treatment.
A session can take up to an hour and you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks. It is nice to lie back and relax during a session so often I will bring my massage couch for you to lie on. I also bring a blanket for you to feel warm and cosy during your treatment. In fact it is not unusual for my clients to fall fast asleep during treatment! Proving just how deeply relaxing and very good for stress this treatment can be.
How does Reflexology work?
It is suspected that Reflexology enhances the lymphatic system’s function and, in return, restores proper chemical balance to the body.
Also, like Acupuncture and Shiatsu Massage, it is believed that reflexology works in a similar way, stimulating the flow of Chi energy (life force) along the body’s meridians bringing it back into balance. Chi is the circulating life force energy that in Chinese philosophy is thought to be inherent in all things.
Another way in which Reflexology could work is by manipulation of the soft tissues, the chemical deposits which build up around nerve endings are shifted and therefore nerve pathways are unblocked and can readily transmit impulses to the corresponding body parts.
In addition, these chemical deposits can impede the "grounding connection" the feet naturally have with the earth but to shift them can promote a better flow of blood around the bodies organs and tissues.
